As a pet parent, witnessing your furry friend in distress is terrifying. While some issues can wait for a scheduled appointment, certain situations require immediate, life-saving veterinary intervention. Knowing the difference between a mild stomach ache and a critical emergency is essential.
1. Breathing Difficulties
If your pet is struggling to breathe, making loud choking noises, or if their gums have turned blue or very pale, this is an absolute emergency. Breathing issues can stem from allergic reactions, heart failure, or, as we frequently see during the intense Kolkata summers, severe heatstroke. Do not wait—head to a clinic immediately.
2. Toxin and Poison Ingestion
Did your dog counter-surf and eat a box of chocolates? Or perhaps your cat chewed on a toxic houseplant or ingested rat poison? The faster you act, the better the prognosis. If you know what they consumed, bring the packaging with you to the vet. Time is critical to induce vomiting safely and administer activated charcoal.
3. Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV) / Bloat
Bloat is a rapidly fatal condition primarily affecting deep-chested dog breeds (like Great Danes and German Shepherds). If your dog has a distended, tight abdomen, is pacing restlessly, and is trying to vomit but nothing is coming up, rush them to a vet. This condition causes the stomach to twist, cutting off blood supply, and requires emergency surgery. Providing the right nutrition and feeding habits can help mitigate risks.
4. Severe Trauma or Unexplained Bleeding
If your pet has been involved in a traffic accident, suffered a bad fall, or is bleeding uncontrollably, wrap them gently in a towel to prevent shock and transport them to the nearest veterinary facility in South Kolkata. Even if they seem fine externally after an accident, internal bleeding is a silent killer.
5. Seizures
A single, short seizure might not be immediately life-threatening, but if the seizure lasts longer than three minutes, or if your pet has multiple seizures in a row (cluster seizures), they need urgent medical care.
